The team chat guide
12 Slack alternatives. Find your team’s fit.

Fryll publishes this guide and is included in the comparison. It is based on official product, pricing, and developer documentation, not a timed hands-on test of every service. The order is not a performance ranking.

The practical differences
What does your team get?
Start with the free-plan boundaries and the cost of a plan you would actually use. A bundled business suite and a self-hosted server have different costs from a chat subscription.

*Monthly equivalent for ten paid seats where published, excluding taxes, promotions, optional add-ons, and infrastructure. Annual rates usually require a year’s commitment; the monthly equivalent is not necessarily a monthly contract. Google’s price includes Workspace. Discord’s core service and Fryll’s current offering are free. Quote-based plans and unverified prices are not estimated.
Start with what matters
A shortlist for your kind of team.
These are starting points for evaluation, not universal winners. Try your real conversations and one actual notification flow before committing.
Build together
A new developer team
Consider Fryll for familiar chat, split view, and direct notification posting. Check its current platform and feature coverage.
Use your existing suite
Already paying for office tools
Evaluate Google Chat or Teams first. Your existing subscription may already cover much of what you need.
Keep the history
A small budget
Pumble includes unlimited history on Free. Chanty also offers searchable history, with a five-member free limit.
Give ideas room
Asynchronous discussion
Compare Zulip’s channel topics with Twist’s threaded discussions. The conversation model matters as much as the price.
Talk it through
Voice and community
Discord is worth evaluating for drop-in voice and community-style collaboration. Check your business administration needs.
Run your environment
Deployment control
Look at Mattermost, Rocket.Chat, and Element. Include maintenance, infrastructure, and support in the decision.
A closer look
Where each tool fits.
Slack
Established team chat and a broad app ecosystem
Slack is the reference point: channels, DMs, threads, huddles, and a large integration ecosystem. It is worth evaluating alongside alternatives if a particular app or established workflow is essential to your team.
Consider before choosing. Separate the free plan’s searchable-history window from data retention: access is limited to 90 days, and content older than one year is deleted. Pro removes the free history restriction.
- Free offering
- 90 days of searchable history; 10 integrations. Content older than a year is deleted.
- Paid entry point
- $7.25 / user / month. $8.75 with monthly billing.
- Hosting and apps
- Vendor-hosted cloud. Web, desktop, and mobile.
- Voice and video
- Free: 1:1 huddles. Group huddles on paid plans.
First notification. Create a Slack app, enable Incoming Webhooks, select a channel during installation, then POST JSON to the webhook URL.
Fryll
New developer teams connecting conversations and notifications
Fryll combines familiar channels, DMs, and threads with up to four conversations side by side on desktop. Developers can generate a personal conversation token and start posting build results, deployment updates, and agent messages through a small HTTP endpoint.
Consider before choosing. Fryll is an early, Mac-first product. Chat runs in the desktop app; the website handles accounts and onboarding. Teams that need browser chat, voice/video, self-hosting, or a large integration catalog should compare the other options below.
- Free offering
- Currently free to use. No paid plan announced in the current terms.
- Paid entry point
- Currently free. No current paid plan.
- Hosting and apps
- Hosted service; no advertised self-hosted edition. Mac desktop; web accounts and onboarding.
- Voice and video
- Voice and video calling are not currently included.
First notification. In a channel or DM, open Details → Your conversation token. Generate your token and POST plain text, form data, or JSON. No separate app registration for this flow.
Microsoft Teams
Teams that need meetings and use Microsoft 365
Teams belongs on the shortlist when meetings and Microsoft tools are already central to work. Essentials provides a paid business entry point, while Microsoft 365 subscriptions can bundle meetings, email, documents, and collaboration.
Consider before choosing. Teams Free is not the same offering as the business product. Microsoft sells plans both with and without Teams; compare the exact edition and region before calculating savings from an existing subscription.
- Free offering
- Separate personal/community edition; 60-minute group meetings, 100 participants.
- Paid entry point
- $4 / user / month. Teams Essentials; paid yearly.
- Hosting and apps
- Vendor-hosted cloud. Web, desktop, and mobile.
- Voice and video
- Chat, voice/video meetings, and screen sharing; plan-specific limits.
First notification. Create a webhook workflow from a channel’s Workflows app, configure its trigger and posting destination, then use the generated URL. Check authentication and tenant policy.
Google Chat
Teams already using Gmail and Google Workspace
Google Chat is included in Google Workspace and connects with Gmail, Drive, Calendar, and Meet. A team already buying Workspace should evaluate it before adding a separate chat subscription.
Consider before choosing. The listed price is for a productivity suite, not a standalone chat license. Webhook eligibility and admin controls depend on the account and edition. Consumer Chat is not interchangeable with a managed business workspace.
- Free offering
- Consumer Chat exists; the documented webhook setup needs Workspace Business or Enterprise.
- Paid entry point
- $7 / user / month. Workspace Starter; $8.40 flexible.
- Hosting and apps
- Vendor-hosted cloud. Web/PWA and mobile; integrated into Gmail.
- Voice and video
- Google Meet integration and huddles; availability varies by plan.
First notification. With apps and webhooks allowed by the administrator, open a space’s Apps & integrations in a browser, add a webhook, copy its URL, and POST JSON.
Discord
Voice-heavy teams and community-style collaboration
Discord makes it easy to spend time together in text and voice channels. It can suit a small team that values drop-in calls or also runs a community, with a familiar bot and webhook model.
Consider before choosing. Evaluate how company work is separated from personal accounts and communities, and whether its administration meets your requirements. Nitro subscriptions are optional individual purchases, not a mandatory business seat license.
- Free offering
- Core text, voice, and video features are free.
- Paid entry point
- Core service free. Nitro is optional and individually priced.
- Hosting and apps
- Vendor-hosted cloud. Web, Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android.
- Voice and video
- Built-in voice/video and screen sharing; quality and upload perks vary.
First notification. Open Server Settings → Integrations → Create Webhook, choose a channel, then POST to the generated URL. Creating webhooks requires the relevant server permission.
Zulip
Technical discussions organized by topic
Zulip gives conversations explicit topics within channels. That structure is useful for parallel technical discussions and asynchronous work: a teammate can return to one topic without reading every message in the channel.
Consider before choosing. Topic-based chat is a different habit from a flat channel feed. Cloud and self-hosted plans have different economics. Self-hosting still needs maintenance, and mobile push for commercial organizations above ten users requires a paid plan.
- Free offering
- Cloud: latest 10,000 messages searchable; 5 GB storage.
- Paid entry point
- $6.67 / user / month. Cloud Standard; $8 monthly.
- Hosting and apps
- Zulip Cloud or self-hosted open-source software. Web, Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android.
- Voice and video
- Uses a configured call provider such as Jitsi or Zoom.
First notification. Use a supported integration or create a bot/API key, then send a message to the appropriate channel and topic through the API.
Mattermost
Technical operations with deployment and administration requirements
Mattermost emphasizes operational collaboration, deployment control, and integrations for technical teams. It is a candidate when your organization needs to manage its environment and can support that operational work.
Consider before choosing. Do not assume an old published per-seat price or treat a technical evaluation as an unrestricted production plan. Confirm the current edition, licensing, infrastructure, and support needs before comparing total cost.
- Free offering
- Current commercial pricing offers limited-use technical evaluation.
- Paid entry point
- Contact sales. Professional and enterprise editions.
- Hosting and apps
- Self-hosted; inquire about managed enterprise options. Web, desktop, and mobile.
- Voice and video
- Audio calls and screen sharing; package-dependent features.
First notification. Create an incoming webhook from Integrations, choose the destination channel, and POST JSON. The server administrator controls whether users can create webhooks.
Rocket.Chat
Teams that need to control and customize deployment
Rocket.Chat offers a configurable team communication environment with self-managed deployment options. Its current plans emphasize secure communication, while Starter provides a smaller deployment path.
Consider before choosing. Starter, Community, and paid editions are different offerings. Confirm concurrency, usage, support, and mobile-push limits. A zero software price still leaves infrastructure and maintenance costs.
- Free offering
- Self-hosted Starter: up to 50 users, with usage limits.
- Paid entry point
- Contact sales. Hosting costs are additional.
- Hosting and apps
- Self-hosted; managed options depend on offering. Web, desktop, and mobile.
- Voice and video
- Meeting integrations such as Jitsi, Zoom, and Google Meet.
First notification. Under workspace Integrations, create an incoming integration, choose a posting user and channel, and copy the generated URL. Optional scripts can transform incoming payloads.
Element
Matrix-based communication and deployment sovereignty
Element is built around Matrix and offers communication with strong deployment-control options. It is relevant when sovereignty and infrastructure requirements drive the decision more than the fastest possible hosted setup.
Consider before choosing. The current enterprise plan starts at 100 users. Its Community offering is positioned for evaluation and non-professional deployments. Separate the Matrix ecosystem’s options from the vendor’s commercial support and hosting offer.
- Free offering
- Current Community offering targets non-professional use and evaluation.
- Paid entry point
- Contact sales. Enterprise starts at 100 users.
- Hosting and apps
- Self-hosted and enterprise deployment options. Web, desktop, and mobile clients.
- Voice and video
- Element Call; deployment configuration matters.
First notification. A common route is Hookshot plus room configuration. The required setup depends on who runs your Matrix environment and which integration components are available.
Pumble
Budget-conscious teams that want searchable history
Pumble offers familiar channels and direct messages with unlimited history on its free plan. That makes it a useful option for small teams that want to retain searchable conversations without immediately buying seats.
Consider before choosing. Group meetings and screen sharing require Pro. Storage and integration limits vary by plan. Check how invited members and multi-channel guests count toward paid seats.
- Free offering
- Unlimited users and message history; 10 GB per workspace.
- Paid entry point
- $2.49 / seat / month. Pro; $2.99 monthly.
- Hosting and apps
- Vendor-hosted cloud. Web, desktop, and mobile.
- Voice and video
- Free 1:1 meetings; group meetings and screen sharing on Pro.
First notification. Create an incoming webhook in workspace settings, choose its channel, and POST JSON. The guide specifies one request per second per webhook and a 10,000-character message limit.
Chanty
Small teams wanting chat and task management together
Chanty combines team messaging with task management and the ability to turn a message into a task. It suits teams that want to keep lightweight coordination close to their conversations.
Consider before choosing. A ten-person team needs a paid plan because Free supports five members. Check the supported integration for your developer workflow; we did not find a documented generic incoming-webhook setup in the official material reviewed.
- Free offering
- Up to 5 members; unlimited searchable history; task management.
- Paid entry point
- $3 / user / month. Business; $4 monthly.
- Hosting and apps
- Hosted service; enterprise options by agreement. Web, desktop, and mobile.
- Voice and video
- Free 1:1 audio/video; group calling on Business.
First notification. Review the supported integrations and edition-specific API access. The current pricing page lists an Enterprise API; do not assume arbitrary webhook posting is included in every plan.
Twist
Teams that prefer asynchronous threaded discussions
Twist puts longer-lived, threaded discussions at the center of team communication. It is worth considering when people work on different schedules and want to follow a subject without constantly watching a live channel.
Consider before choosing. The free plan hides history older than a month; the vendor says the data is retained and becomes accessible after upgrading. Evaluate the conversation style with your team, and account for a separate meeting tool.
- Free offering
- One month of accessible history; 5 integrations; 5 GB storage.
- Paid entry point
- $6 / user / month. Unlimited; $8 monthly.
- Hosting and apps
- Vendor-hosted cloud. Web, Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android.
- Voice and video
- Use a separate calling service or integration.
First notification. Create and install a Channel Updates or Thread Updates integration, then POST to its URL to create threads or add comments to a thread.
Flock
Small teams wanting messaging and built-in productivity tools
Flock combines direct messages and channels with polls, reminders, notes, and tasks. It offers a free Starter plan and a Pro tier with more history, channel, and meeting capabilities.
Consider before choosing. Starter has message-search and public-channel limits, and private channels are listed under paid plans. The current pricing page did not expose a verifiable numeric Pro price, so we have not repeated older prices from other articles.
- Free offering
- 1–20 members; 10,000 searchable messages; 10 public channels.
- Paid entry point
- Check current quote. Numeric Pro price not verified.
- Hosting and apps
- Vendor-hosted cloud. Web, desktop, and mobile.
- Voice and video
- Starter: 1:1 video. Pro: group video and screen sharing.
First notification. In the Developer Dashboard, add an incoming webhook, select its channel, name, and icon, then POST to the generated URL. The guide lists ten webhooks per user.
For developer teams
Compare the setup before the curl.
Several tools accept a notification in one HTTP request. The difference is how you obtain a credential, where it can post, and which permissions or plan you need.
Fryll’s route is a personal conversation token. Slack uses an app and incoming webhook. Discord and Pumble offer configured webhooks. Google Chat requires an eligible Workspace account, while Teams uses a webhook workflow.
See Fryll’s complete setup →Try the same task in your shortlist
- Create a channel for build results.
- Find out who can create posting credentials.
- Send a successful build and a failed build.
- Add a link to the logs and a follow-up reply.
- Revoke the credential and check how failures are reported.
Record the steps you actually need. Keep API credentials in your secret store, and check whether a provider’s fixed webhook body needs an adapter.
How we compared these Slack alternatives
We reviewed each vendor’s public product, pricing, and integration documentation on October 17, 2026. Links appear with every assessment. We chose tools spanning hosted team chat, business suites, asynchronous discussion, community communication, and self-managed deployment.
The criteria are practical for a new team: conversation structure, free history and member limits, paid cost, apps, calling, hosting, and the route to a first developer notification. Feature availability can depend on plan, region, and administrator settings.
We do not assign invented scores, claim measured setup speeds, or assume an unpublished price. “Not verified” means the reviewed material did not establish the detail. Check the linked vendor source before buying. Fryll’s own assessment reflects its current documented product rather than its roadmap.
