Slack vs Discord for Small Teams: Pricing & Features

Compare Slack vs Discord for work: free-plan limits, pricing for small teams, message history, calls, file uploads, and developer notifications.
Separate conversation panels connected into a shared workspace

Slack is the stronger starting point for teams that need workplace integrations and business administration. Discord is worth considering when free group voice and a shared community are central to how people work. For a small developer team, the decision often comes down to three things: the conversations you need to find later, how you run calls, and how your tools post updates.

Neither product is automatically right because your team writes code. This comparison focuses on a new team’s everyday workflow, including the difference between Slack Free and Pro, rather than assuming you are moving an existing workspace.

Published by Fryll, a Slack alternative for developers and their agents. We reviewed official product and developer documentation on October 18, 2026. Recommendations below are our assessment of those features, not measured performance scores or a claim that we tested every plan.

What does each cost for 5 or 10 people?

Both can start at $0. Slack Pro’s standard US list price is $7.25 per user per month on annual billing or $8.75 with monthly billing. That makes five seats $36.25 or $43.75 per month, and ten seats $72.50 or $87.50. The annual figures are monthly equivalents of an annual commitment; taxes and introductory discounts are excluded. See Slack’s current pricing.

Discord’s core service is free. Nitro adds individual perks; it is not a required business license for every member of a server. A ten-person team does not need ten Nitro subscriptions merely to chat and join voice channels. Work out whether you need larger uploads or upgraded streaming before treating those extras as a team-wide cost.

For budgeting, compare the plan you would actually use. “Free Slack versus free Discord” is a different decision from “Slack Pro versus Discord plus a separate set of business tools.” Include any meeting, file-storage, and identity-management tools that your workflow still needs.

History and threads: can you find the decision later?

A useful test is to imagine a teammate joining after six months. Can they find why you chose a database, what happened during a release, and the discussion behind a feature? That is a more revealing question than counting how many messages a team can send.

Slack Free has a 90-day viewing and search window. Its retention settings can keep data for a year or delete it after 90 days; retained data eventually ages out too. Upgrading cannot restore messages that have already been permanently deleted. Our Slack free-plan limits guide explains the distinction.

Slack’s replies keep a follow-up attached to its parent message. Discord supports both threads inside channels and forum channels for discussions organized as posts. Try a design question with several parallel replies: does your team naturally continue in the right place, or keep returning to the main channel?

Discord threads close after inactivity, with a three-day default in its current documentation. Closing does not delete the discussion; a reply can reopen it unless a moderator has locked it. That is different from losing access to old messages because of a plan limit. See the Threads FAQ.

Calls and files: the differences you notice every day

Discord’s persistent voice channels are a natural fit for teams that like to drop into a room, pair on a problem, or work alongside a community. Slack huddles sit beside the channel conversation, with group participation on paid plans. The relevant question is whether your team wants an always-available room or a call attached to a particular discussion. See Discord’s getting-started guide and Slack’s plan comparison.

File sizes are easy to get wrong in older comparison articles. Discord’s current attachment documentation says the free limit increased to 20 MB in August 2026. It checks the size before compression. The same page lists 50 MB for Nitro Basic and up to 1 GB for Nitro.

Try the files your team shares: a screenshot, a short bug recording, and a design export. If the last two exceed your chosen plan’s limit, agree on a shared file-storage service and post links. A screenshot-heavy workflow and a video-heavy workflow can have very different costs.

GitHub, builds, and deployment notifications

Both Slack and Discord can receive automated updates. A useful comparison separates a provider’s ready-made app from a custom HTTP notification: one may offer richer subscriptions, while the other lets your own script decide exactly what to send.

  • Slack: create an app, enable Incoming Webhooks, install it with a channel destination, then post a JSON message. Workspace app-approval policy can affect setup. Official webhook guide.
  • Discord: create a webhook under the server’s integrations, choose a channel, and use its URL to post. The person setting this up needs permission to manage webhooks. Official webhook guide.

Use the same sample update in both: repository, environment, result, commit, and a link to the run. Then add a human question beneath it. Evaluate the whole conversation, including how the next person finds it, rather than only whether the HTTP request succeeds.

For Slack Free, count your real app list. GitHub, a project tracker, file storage, a calendar, monitoring, and custom apps share a finite allowance. An integration you need in month three should be part of the initial plan comparison.

Which fits your team—and where does Fryll fit?

Choose Slack when specific workplace apps, business administration, and established company workflows drive the decision. Evaluate the exact paid plan if group huddles and long-term searchable conversations matter to you.

Choose Discord when group voice, community participation, and a free starting point matter most. Before adopting it for company work, decide who owns the server, how roles are assigned, and how access is removed when someone leaves. Test the required controls instead of assuming that a familiar chat interface implies the same administration model.

Consider Fryll if you want a Slack alternative built around developer conversations and agent updates. Fryll provides channels, DMs, threads, up to four conversations side by side on desktop, and posting from scripts through personal conversation tokens. It is currently free and Mac-first. It does not currently include voice/video calling or a full browser chat client.

That makes Fryll worth trying for a team that already has its meeting tools and wants its code updates close to the conversation. You can inspect the developer features, follow the notification documentation, and check the current terms. For a wider shortlist, see our comparison of 12 Slack alternatives.

Common questions

Can a startup use Discord instead of Slack?

Yes, if its conversation, voice, and administration model fits the team. Run a small real project through it first: share a decision, post a build update, hold a call, and test an offboarding scenario. Those tasks reveal more than a generic feature checklist.

Do you need Nitro to use Discord for work?

No. Core chat and voice do not require a Nitro purchase for each teammate. Buy individual or server upgrades only when the particular limits and perks are useful to your workflow.

Is Discord always better because it is free?

No. Price is one input. A missing required integration or control can cost more in workarounds than a subscription. Equally, a paid chat plan is unnecessary if your team is happy with the free service and its limits.
